This distinction matters because it sets accurate expectations. A player who learns blackjack basic strategy and plays it perfectly will still lose over a long enough period — but at approximately 0.5% of total dollars wagered instead of 2-3%. On a $25 bet, 60 hands per hour, that difference is roughly $18 per hour versus $2 per hour in expected losses. Over a weekend of play, that compounds into hundreds of dollars saved.
The most powerful strategic decision happens before you sit down. Choosing to play blackjack over keno reduces your expected hourly cost by 98% on comparable stakes. Choosing European roulette over American roulette cuts the house edge in half. These decisions are derived from complete mathematical analysis of all possible outcomes. They are optimal not because they guarantee wins in any individual hand, but because over thousands of repetitions they produce the best average outcome possible given the game's structure.
Optimal strategy and good game selection mean nothing if a bad run of variance wipes out your session bankroll in twenty minutes. Betting no more than 1-2% of your session bankroll per hand extends your expected play time dramatically, giving variance time to work in both directions. Setting a loss limit before you sit and respecting it regardless of what's happening prevents a bad session from becoming a catastrophic one.
No betting system overcomes the house edge.
